A fort at sea becomes a luxury venue
Posted by • February 7, 2012

A man-made island 2km (1 mile) from Portsmouth Harbour on the south coast of England opens in March as a 5-star luxury retreat.
Spitbank Fort was built in the 1870s to protect Portsmouth from a possible invasion by Napoleon III. It is 50 metres (162 ft) in diameter with walls that are 4.6 metres (15ft) thick. It will be open for exclusive hire, special events and corporate hire.
The fort is accessible only by boat and will have accommodation for 16 guests in eight bedrooms and function space for up to 60 people. There will be three private dining rooms and bars, including a rooftop champagne bar, a wine cellar, library, rooftop hot pool, sauna and sun decks. It has its own fresh water supply from an artesian well 120 metres (400ft) below sea level.

Spitbank will be fully staffed with a chef to prepare modern British cuisine. The resort is offering special introductory rates from £8,000 per night for exclusive use. Rates are based on two sharing and inclusive of all meals and valid for bookings until May 2012.
An introductory Day Delegate Island Escape is also on offer from £150 per person based on 10 delegates using the fort and its facilities for up to eight daylight hours.
Spitbank Fort is 34km (21 miles) from Southampton Airport and 124km (77 miles) from London.
