A favourite musical at a grand old theatre
Posted by • February 7, 2012

Opera North is presenting its first production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel this May. The show, voted best musical of the 20th century by Time Magazine, will open at the Leeds Grand Theatre before playing at The Lowry, Salford Quays and then at the Barbican in London in August and September.
Carousel is a story of true love and the tragedy of feelings left unspoken. Memorable numbers in this classic American musical include You’ll Never Walk Alone, If I Loved You and June is Bustin’ Out all Over.
The cast for this major new production includes the operatic soprano Gillene Herbert in the role of Julie Jordan in Leeds and Salford, alternating with Katherine Manley at the Barbican. American baritone Keith Phares will play Billy Bigelow, and Claire Boulter will play Carrie Pipperidge in Leeds and Salford, alternating with Sarah Tynan at the Barbican.
Opera North is based at Leeds Grand Theatre in Yorkshire, which opened in 1838. The theatre has been completely refurbished and is a Grade II listed building. It has one of the most complete Victorian scenic paint shops left in Great Britain. This is extremely rare and still in use.
Carousel opens at the Grand Theatre on 2 May and runs to 19 May, tickets £17.50–£65. It is at The Lowry, Salford Quays from 23 to 26 May (£25–£50) and at the Barbican, London from 15 August to 15 September (£12.50–£75).
